“Aa Gaye Religious Log…”: Tanushree Dutta Hits Back at Trolls for Eating Mutton During Shravan
Former Miss India and Bollywood actress Tanushree Dutta has once again found herself in the spotlight—not for her films or activism, but for her food choices. The outspoken actress, who has never shied away from expressing her opinions, was recently trolled on social media after she shared a picture of herself enjoying a mutton dish during the holy month of Shravan, a period when many Hindus observe strict vegetarianism.
But Tanushree, true to her bold persona, was unfazed. Taking to social media, she clapped back at the criticism with a fiery message:
“Aa gaye religious log… Just because I had mutton during Shravan, suddenly I’m a criminal now?”
The storm began when Tanushree posted an Instagram story featuring a plate of well-cooked mutton curry, captioned “Much needed Sunday indulgence .” While many of her fans simply appreciated the post, a section of the internet was quick to slam her for being “disrespectful” towards Hindu customs, especially during the auspicious month of Shravan, which is considered sacred for Lord Shiva devotees.
Tanushree didn’t remain silent for long. In a follow-up story and an Instagram post, she wrote:
“I respect all religions, but I don’t subscribe to blind faith or food policing. What I eat is my personal choice. If you’re fasting, great. I respect that. But don’t expect everyone to follow the same lifestyle.”
She further added:
“Every year I see the same hypocrisy. People who drink, cheat, and lie all year suddenly become saints during Shravan. Let’s stop pretending.”
Her no-holds-barred post gained traction, earning both praise and backlash in equal measure. While some called her “courageous” and “authentic,” others continued to troll her for “hurting religious sentiments.”
Shravan (also spelled as Sawan) is considered the holiest month in the Hindu calendar, particularly among followers of Lord Shiva. Many people observe vegetarianism, fasting, and spiritual discipline during this time. Eating non-vegetarian food is widely avoided, especially in more orthodox households.
However, it’s important to note that practices vary across regions, communities, and individuals. Not all Hindus follow the same dietary restrictions during this period, and the choice to eat meat is often personal rather than prescriptive.
Twitter and Instagram exploded with reactions, dividing netizens into two camps:
Many fans also praised her for not deleting the post and for standing her ground in the face of online hate.
This isn’t the first time Tanushree Dutta has made headlines for speaking out. From reviving the #MeToo movement in India to calling out Bollywood hypocrisy, she has developed a reputation for being forthright and fearless. Her latest food-related controversy is just another example of how public figures—especially women—are scrutinized for even the most personal choices.
As she aptly put it—
“I believe in a spiritual connection, not ritual policing. Let’s stop measuring devotion by diet.”
Whether you agree or disagree, one thing’s for sure: Tanushree Dutta isn’t afraid to speak her truth.
