Telecom giants Airtel and Reliance Jio faced a major setback as thousands of users across India reported sudden network issues, leaving them unable to make calls or access mobile data. The disruption, which began earlier today, quickly escalated into a trending topic on social media, with subscribers expressing frustration over the outage.
According to multiple user complaints, both Airtel and Jio services experienced disruptions simultaneously, raising concerns about a possible system glitch or technical failure. Customers reported that calls were either failing to connect or dropping midway, while mobile data was not working in several regions.
As per outage-tracking platforms, the majority of complaints came from metros like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Kolkata, though smaller towns also reported disruptions.
Platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram were flooded with posts from angry subscribers who highlighted how the outage impacted their daily work, especially those relying on mobile internet for remote tasks. Many users shared screenshots showing “No Service” or “Emergency Calls Only” messages on their phones.
Some netizens humorously compared the outage to a forced digital detox, while others demanded compensation from the service providers. Hashtags like #AirtelDown and #JioDown quickly gained traction.
So far, neither Airtel nor Reliance Jio has issued a detailed explanation about the root cause of the outage. However, internal sources suggest it could be linked to a temporary technical fault in core network systems, which affected connectivity across multiple circles.
Telecom experts point out that given the scale of the disruption, it may have stemmed from server misconfigurations or fiber backbone issues, which require time to fix.
The outage had a direct effect on professionals dependent on mobile data for video calls, online classes, and digital payments. Many commuters also reported being unable to use ride-hailing apps and UPI transactions, highlighting how deeply mobile connectivity is tied to everyday life.
This is not the first time major telecom providers have faced mass outages. In the past, both Airtel and Jio have assured users of quick resolution, but the simultaneous failure across two major networks has amplified concerns about India’s telecom infrastructure.
With complaints rising rapidly, it is expected that the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) may seek clarification from both companies. Large-scale outages often invite scrutiny as telecom services are considered critical infrastructure.
Industry watchers believe that if the disruption persists, TRAI might ask operators to provide compensation or service credits to affected users.
In the meantime, experts advise users to:
While temporary outages are not uncommon in telecom, the simultaneous failure of India’s two largest mobile networks has sparked debate about resilience and backup systems. With over 800 million combined subscribers relying on Airtel and Jio, even a few hours of disruption can ripple across businesses, education, and personal lives.
As both companies rush to restore services, subscribers await clarity on what caused the sudden blackout. Until then, the incident serves as a reminder of how dependent modern life has become on uninterrupted mobile connectivity.
