Apple MacBook Pro With M6 Chip and OLED Display Expected by Early 2027, Says Mark Gurman

Apple’s MacBook Pro lineup is gearing up for one of its most significant upgrades yet, with Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reporting that the company could launch a MacBook Pro powered by the next-generation M6 chip and an OLED display by early 2027.

According to Gurman’s Power On newsletter, the M6 chip is expected to deliver a substantial leap in performance and efficiency compared to its predecessors, leveraging advancements in Apple’s custom silicon architecture. Built on an even smaller fabrication process, the M6 could further extend battery life while delivering faster CPU and GPU capabilities — a move aimed at professionals working with demanding workflows like 3D rendering, AI processing, and high-resolution video editing.

OLED Display for Pro Models

The shift to OLED display technology would be another major milestone for Apple’s laptops. Current MacBook Pro models use mini-LED panels, which already offer high brightness and contrast, but OLED could push visual quality further with deeper blacks, richer colors, and improved power efficiency.

The report suggests Apple has been working closely with display suppliers to ensure the panels meet its exacting standards for color accuracy, refresh rates, and durability. An OLED MacBook Pro would also likely support ProMotion with up to 120Hz refresh rates for smoother visuals.

Part of a Larger Upgrade Cycle

Apple’s 2027 MacBook Pro refresh appears to be part of a broader product update cycle that will see the company integrating OLED displays into more devices, including future iPads and MacBook Air models. Gurman noted that Apple tends to align these major changes with new chip generations, ensuring customers get a significant performance and feature bump at the same time.

What to Expect

While exact specifications remain under wraps, early expectations for the M6 MacBook Pro include:

  • Two sizes: 14-inch and 16-inch models
  • M6 Pro and M6 Max variants for different performance needs
  • Extended battery life beyond the already impressive 18–22 hours in current models
  • Enhanced AI and machine learning capabilities baked into the chip
  • Potential weight and thickness reductions thanks to OLED’s slimmer design

If Apple sticks to its usual development timelines, prototypes could begin surfacing internally by late 2025, with final production starting in 2026 ahead of a Q1 2027 launch.

For now, MacBook Pro fans will have to wait, but if Gurman’s prediction holds true, the M6-powered OLED MacBook Pro could be one of the most exciting laptop releases of the decade.
