Shwetha Menon Creates History as First Woman President of Kerala’s AMMA

In a landmark moment for the Malayalam film industry, actor Shwetha Menon has become the first woman ever to be elected as the President of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA). This historic victory not only breaks a decades-long tradition but also signals a progressive shift in the leadership of one of India’s most influential regional film bodies.

A Trailblazing Win

Founded in 1994, AMMA has been the governing and welfare body for Malayalam cinema artists for over three decades. While the organisation has seen several veteran male actors in top roles, no woman had ever helmed the presidency—until now.

The election was held at AMMA’s headquarters in Kochi, where members voted to select the new office-bearers. Shwetha Menon’s victory was decisive, reflecting a growing demand within the fraternity for inclusive leadership and fresh perspectives.

From Screen Star to Industry Leader

Shwetha Menon, known for her powerful performances in films such as Paleri Manikyam, Salt N’ Pepper, and Ozhimuri, has enjoyed a career spanning over two decades. She has won multiple awards, including Kerala State Film Awards, and has been a respected voice both on and off the screen.

Beyond acting, Menon has been vocal about gender equality, artist welfare, and industry transparency. Her move into an administrative role is seen as a natural extension of her commitment to the Malayalam film fraternity.

Her Vision for AMMA

After her election, Shwetha Menon expressed gratitude to her colleagues for the trust they placed in her. Outlining her vision, she emphasised three key priorities:

  1. Strengthening Welfare Initiatives – Ensuring financial aid, healthcare, and support systems for struggling artists.
  2. Promoting Gender Inclusivity – Creating safe, equal, and fair working environments for both men and women in the industry.
  3. Encouraging Young Talent – Offering more opportunities and training platforms for aspiring actors and technicians.

She also promised to focus on modernising AMMA’s functioning, with better communication channels and a more transparent approach to decision-making.

Industry Reactions

Several prominent actors and filmmakers congratulated Menon on her election, calling it a “historic and overdue milestone.” Actor Prithviraj Sukumaran tweeted that her win would “pave the way for more women in leadership roles in Malayalam cinema.” Director Aashiq Abu noted that her election showed “a welcome change in the cultural mindset of the industry.”

A Shift in Malayalam Cinema Politics

For years, AMMA’s leadership was criticised for being dominated by senior male actors, with decision-making often viewed as exclusive. Menon’s election is being hailed as proof that the industry is ready to embrace change.

Industry observers believe her tenure could see AMMA become more artist-centric, addressing long-standing issues such as payment disputes, workplace harassment, and career support for struggling talents.

The Road Ahead

While her victory is historic, Shwetha Menon faces challenges. From balancing creative and administrative responsibilities to tackling industry politics, her leadership will be closely watched. But her supporters believe her outspoken nature and strong track record will serve her well in navigating the complexities of her new role.

By becoming the first woman to lead AMMA, Shwetha Menon has not only shattered a glass ceiling but has also inspired a new generation of artists, especially women, to aim for leadership positions in the entertainment industry. Her presidency marks a defining moment in Kerala cinema’s history—one that blends tradition with a much-needed wave of progress.
