The popular pilgrimage route to Mata Vaishno Devi came under a massive landslide on Tuesday following hours of relentless rainfall. Initially, officials confirmed five deaths and multiple injuries, but as rescue work advanced, the toll climbed to 15 fatalities.
The Army, NDRF, and local police rushed to the site to evacuate stranded devotees and shift the injured to hospitals. The shrine board immediately suspended the pilgrimage until conditions stabilize. Roads, power supply, and communication lines in the district also took a heavy hit due to the downpour.
Weather Worsens Crisis
Authorities have issued warnings of more heavy rain in the next 36–40 hours, keeping the region on high alert. Emergency control rooms are now active round-the-clock, and helpline numbers have been circulated for citizens in need of assistance.
Other parts of Jammu have also been badly hit. In Doda district, sudden flash floods caused by a cloudburst raised water levels in rivers and streams, increasing fears of further flooding.
Amit Shah’s Assurance
Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed condolences over the tragedy and assured the state of full central support. He personally contacted Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to review the situation and promised deployment of additional NDRF teams if required.
LG Sinha said all government departments have been directed to prioritize relief and rescue work. He also posted a message expressing grief for the victims’ families. Meanwhile, CM Omar Abdullah briefed the Home Minister about widespread destruction caused by floods and landslides, and appealed for urgent assistance.
