An intense encounter broke out in Kishtwar district of Jammu & Kashmir on Saturday after security forces launched an operation to track down suspected terrorists in the region. The gunbattle erupted following a joint cordon-and-search operation by the Army, J&K Police, and paramilitary forces based on intelligence inputs about militant movement in the area.
Operation Launched After Intelligence Alert
According to security officials, credible information was received about the presence of armed militants hiding in the forested belt of Patimah area in Kishtwar. Acting swiftly, a team of security personnel surrounded the suspected hideout in the early hours of the morning.
The militants, upon being challenged, opened fire, prompting a retaliatory exchange from the forces. The situation quickly escalated into a fierce gunfight.
Heavy Firing and Tight Security Measures
Eyewitnesses reported hearing intermittent bursts of gunfire from the encounter site. Additional reinforcements have been rushed to the area to prevent the militants from escaping, and all entry and exit points have been sealed.
Security forces are exercising extreme caution due to the dense forest terrain, which gives militants a tactical advantage. Drone surveillance and night-vision equipment are also being deployed to track their movements.
Terrorist Activity in Kishtwar
Kishtwar, once considered relatively peaceful, has seen a rise in militant activities in recent years. Security agencies believe the area is being used by infiltrators to move between Jammu and Kashmir regions due to its remote topography and proximity to the Pir Panjal range.
Officials say this operation is part of a larger counter-insurgency push to neutralize militant hideouts before they can carry out attacks.

As of the latest update, there have been no confirmed reports of casualties on either side. The operation is ongoing, and authorities have urged residents to stay indoors until the area is fully sanitized.
